What happened last night

Some of you may or may not know what exactly happened last night. The site was down for a few hours. So here's the rundown of what happened. Last night, Randomouscrap and the other staff were talking about security. I thought they meant like SSL and better hashing, but apparently they meant stuff like bots. I started bringing up how it might be a good idea to get some DDOS protection in case something happened. I left after 10 minutes and I play some Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition and Boson X on Steam. Apparently, meanwhile, the site was getting DDOSed, and Random naturally thought it was me, as I brought up the subject and I like making points. So he sent me a pretty nasty email about how I'm "not the owner, developer, or even a treasured member". Confused, I try going to the site, and it's still down. So, as last time, I go to the Petit Computer Wikia to see what the hell happened. I go to post what I got in the forums when I see that the chat is active. Hoping that I won't be banned right away, I go on. The monent I go on, I say "What the fuck?" IAmAPersson starts talking, and Lumage bans him for some reason. When he comes back on, I asked him to explain what happened. He tells me that the site was DDOSed and that I was the prime suspect. After a few minutes of talking, the others believe that I didn't do it. But then Randomouscrap came on. I kept telling him I didn't do it. He kept trying to pin it on me. I told him I'll give him any proof necessary to show I didn't do it (Steam logs, Xbox messages, etc), but he said he needs proof that someone else did it, not that I didn't do it. I end up having to go, and I told Random to email me, whether it's that I'm still wrongfully banned or that I'm unbanned, and that he's sorry about it. When I wake up (as I went to sleep a while after having to go), I check my email. I saw that there was a new email called Cloudflare. Of course, there was another email, and I didn't see it. So I sent him another email asking if he still thinks I did it. I go back, and I see the new email. The DDOSer was Hydra_the_Programmer, AKA The_Aquua_Hybrid, AKA MEGAMON. Nobody thought it was him, but it was. The rest of the email apologizes. I'll never forgive Randomouscrap. I'll still be mad at him for a while. But it seemed like it was me. Anyways, that's what happened last night. Bye.

Damn, it's really not fair to tear apart the staff like that. Random has enough shit to deal with for you to "never forgive him". Have some understanding. I wouldn't jump to conclusions like that, but we should understand that he has trouble dealing with things like this and dealing with his anger, and we should be respectful. I know, I wasn't there, I'm not you. But try a little tenderness, please.

He won't care. He even said in the email to not forgive him.

k

Um, I'm not sure if this has to do with the DDOS attacks, but there are no commands, no PM rooms, no nothing. Did MEGAMON's DDOS attacks destroy the chat server modules?

I was completely unaware of any of this. I have to say, they weren't wrong to suspect you because it's the most obvious conclusion, and random did apologize as soon as the truth came out. What more do you want? You admitted yourself that you "like making points". To be honest, if I was there, I probably would have thought it was you, too. You have to put yourself in other people's shoes sometimes. If the roles were reversed, would you have done the same? If you had a website, and someone talked about DDOS protection for that website, the. logged off and the website was DDOSed soon after.. What would you think? Obviously your first assumption would be that that person did it. Random had the guts and decency to apologize to you. I haven't seen the apology of course, only you have it, but I imagine that it's sincere and not making excuses. Now I'm going to ask a key question - what, specifically, did random do that is unforgivable?

There is a severe memory leak in the chat server. Until it is resolved, modules are disabled. I'm sorry, that means PM rooms are disabled as well. This should only be temporary... maybe a few days at most.

wow this was deeper than i thought

So, any security issues here? Any chance passwords leaked or anything?

No. A DoS attack just spams requests to flood the server so that it can't handle the requests, hence the name, "denial of service." It's not a hacking attempt. The site is... hee! Safer than ever.

He has every right to be mad. Random has all the power, but he was wrong. It's not fun when you get blamed for something you didn't do with, as far as you know, no chance to prove yourself.

Why does it seem like we have to convince Shadow that he shouldn't be mad at Random? That's stupid. Shadow acknowledged that he was suspicious and understands that, and also that that doesn't make him feel any better about it.

Okay, what's wrong with being upset for being blamed for (D)DoSing a community I enjoy? It doesn't feel that great when you get sent a pretty nasty email saying:
You're not the owner of SmileBASIC Source. You're not a developer of SmileBASIC Source. You're not even a treasured member of SmileBASIC Source. You're a little child who thinks he knows everything and is now breaking things to get your point across
You should know that I felt very confused after seeing that. I thought "Maybe it was sent to me by accident." But it wasn't. I felt confused and angry and I don't even know what else. So why shouldn't I be angry?

its always best to forgive and forget. sure I understand why your upset i would to but,its time to forgive, drop it and never bring it up again. I hope you have a better rest of the week :)

Okay, so I'm supposed to just forgive somebody, just, what, 12 hours later? I'm gonna be upset for a while. It'll go away sometime, but I'm not going to be all nice to him.

Well yeah, alright, I'd feel like crap too :(

Exactly.

To assuage some more misconceptions: The attack did not cause or aggravate the chat memory leak. The problem existed before that. It was found before the incident. Besides any emotional damage, there really aren't any lasting affects, okay? We are not the US government or law enforcement.

I'm going to be honest, if I was pissed that some website I was on staff for didn't have DoS attack prevention, (though I would have to be really mad) DoS-ing the website is something I may do to prove a point. Am I saying I think you did it? No. I'm just saying Random has reason to pin you as the suspect, though not enough to conclude you are definitively the attacker. After you telling him you didn't attack the site, he is trying to believe you're a liar, which means he believes he can ignore whatever he wants to ignore from you. That is terribly unfair. Being seen as a liar means you have no control of the situation anymore as anything you do can be simply ignored. It may have even worked out for better if you took the blame, because he wouldn't believe you're lying. The reason I don't believe you're the attacker is because I KNOW that situations that line up to be just terrible for an innocent person happen in the real world. Not just in sitcoms and dramas. I have been in one in the past and I couldn't do anything. They pinned me as a liar so nothing I could say would make a difference. All I could do was move on. Losing control of a situation is my bigges fears, so I don't believe in letting people "run out of chances". I try to consider everything I hear, even if it means I'll be gullible. I would rather believe a lie than shun the truth.

Yes, I'm not a good person. Maybe you'll believe my self-criticisms from the website shutdown thread now:
I have many problems. I'm not a particularly good leader and I have a short temper. I can't be stretched too far and I don't deal with pressure well.
Not mentioned here is that I'm sick and twisted with little to no remorse for terrible actions. People should not defend me or assume I'm never at fault. I'm always at fault if the situation involves me and I will almost always do the wrong thing, so please don't defend me anymore. Anyway, enough about me. I want to make it perfectly clear that through Shadow's intelligent suggestions, our website's content is now distributed through a CDN. A CDN is a Content Delivery Network which places website assets like images and javascript in very fast servers all around the world, bringing the content closer to your location (kind of like Amazon shipping centers). This means much faster page loads and hopefully a little dos protection; it should stop basic attacks like Megamon's, but I'm not sure about real attacks. You should all be thankful to Shadow for his suggestion (not for attacking the website, which he didn't). Edit: It looks like posts may be a little broken (empty lines are getting removed). I'll try to fix it soon. Edit2: fixed, nevermind.
