I'm stuck in the darkness area. I have the lantern, and in one of the rooms, the king says I need a special item to destroy the breakable blocks on the ceiling. The sword, bombs, and shurikens don't work. I want to be able to explore more than the darkness, normal, and magma zones. How can I explore more?

Sounds like you don't have the 4th weapon (neither sword, bombs, or shurikens). You should easily see it in one of the rooms in the darkness area. How to obtain it is up to your wits!

changing your shape to a cat, ninja, robot, etc.

The king said you need a KEY ITEM, which you don't have yet. Spoiler
With that rod you should be able to find a mural somewhere in the dark area. Decipher its meaning.

Aww... the Lord did warn you about saving and would have warned you again had you used your Stopwatch before boss fights :(
