It's called Pico-8. I figured someone on here would get a kick out of this. http://www.lexaloffle.com/pico-8.php

Oooh, sounds awesome. Too bad its too difficult for me. I just learned how to use DEF, and now i'm trying to figure out DIM. Maybe someone else can do this? Oh yeah, i'm a fan of your videos! I learned sprite collision from you, now time for bg collision!

Nice! Glad I could help. DIM is used to declare an Array and there happens to be a great tutorial for arrays on this site under the resources tab.

It's not quite the same as SB; it uses Lua with a special library, and the limits are a lot stricter (though the speed is not). Still, it's a cool thing and I kinda want to buy it :P. Celeste was originally a PICO-8 game.

I really like that you can export the game as a special .png or html to play on a webpage. If you get it, I suggest just getting it free with Voxeltron. Once they update Voxeltron to have scripting I think it's definitely going to be worth the extra five bucks.

Is it more powerful then SmileBASIC?

take that how you will

That's interesting but it looks like it's kind of stunted itself to keep the art style of "only five colors allowed on the screen at once". I think what we're missing is a language as easy to use as SB (especially graphics wise) without all the limitations. In 2016 you don't need assembly level optimization for 2d sprite games, you really just don't.

Darkbasic is pretty good

I recommend Processing. I've messed around with it for a few hours and it's sort of like a mix between the graphics commands of SmileBASIC and the power of Java. (also there's currently a bundle that includes PICO-8 and a few books, it looks good)
