The "SB Download Station Project"

Root / Talk About Programs / [.]

I dont know if this is the right place to post this, but I got a great idea. Remember the Nintendo DS Download Station? The project has some inspiration from this. Now, how this would work? Its simple. If you have used a DS Download Station before, it would be self-explanatory, with some alterations. But if you have not used it... here it goes. The DS Download Station was a service available on Airports, Game stores, AT&T Retail Stores, and much more. For example, you were shopping and you had your DS on your pocket or something. Then, you found a DS Download Station and use the Download Mode to play demos. More detailed information here (Wikipedia Article) However, for each region, the system was different. For Japan, 3 PCs connected to the internet could communicate with the DS and download the demos from there. For Europe and USA, however... 3 DS were used because the internet was extremely limited on those times. Ok, but I came here because of the service announcement, not useless information. Yeah, yeah, we will get into that. The SB Download Station project will be focused on game demos, trailers, gameplay videos and game updates before they are released. So, here it goes an explanation: An exciting game for SB4 is coming for summer (yeah), but you dont want to wait so long to play the game. Thats why SB Download Station exists. Here are 2 options of how it would work:
  • Being a standalone program with weekly updates.
  • Being embedded to the old site and new site.
As the standalone program, a simple menu will show up with the available demos, just like this: Now, as an embedded page on SBS (this and the other one) it would be a tab (on this SBS) that would take you to a page (animated background, mostly like the homebrew launcher background, but this time on random colors, changing without refreshing the page) with all the demos available, with trailers, gameplay videos and much more. As an embedded page on the new SBS... Um... Well, you just search on the search box Download Station and there it goes, select the page and it will take you to it with the same content. (Same background, same everything) In this thread you can post suggestions, new demos to add for the 1st volume (just as the Download Station). (And I would need the code for the demos, as Im not experienced very much on coding... :P ) Thanks for watching the page and remember to visit it often!

Do you mean that this would just list some stuff with info and a key? What's the point of a demo if you can already download most finished projects? This sounds kinda neat but I don't see what the purpose is. I'm probably misunderstanding something?

Yeah (I think). The purpose of this is: You announce the game you are making, still on development, you PM me (and send me the code of the demo), and I will upload it. Then, when the final game is released, the demo will be removed. However, if the game is cancelled or something... The demo will remain there. And, I still dont know what format should I use. (Embedded... or standalone program?) (Sorry for editing a lot my post)

Woah almost on the top of popular pages I didnt expect this... :O Anyways another idea for the project: Every week (or month) new demos will be revealed, and you can also see a new feature called the "Virtual Magazine". Whats the Virtual Magazine? Remember the good old videogame magazines? Those with leaks from new games, cheats, and so on. Well, the "Virtual Magazine" has mostly the same content, but with leaks from upcoming SB games (both SB3 and SB4), cheats, secrets, and more. And if you thought this would need a subscription, you are wrong. (Take that, nintendo). The Virtual Magazine would be free and will be updating weekly. Note for the leaks: it would require permission from the creator.

so your trying to recreate old magazines and make a demo station. dumb idea but I'm totally in if this becomes a reality.

welp You can give ideas too

simple, it connects to a page on sbs either through a mic cable(3DS)or other ways, and downloads all the best tutorials, pages or whatever so even if sbs is dead 300 years later, you can still use it, now you can use it to get tutorials offline, game keys or anything else but it would take years without dlc

Well... I think thats true. I could make a "microphone cable" mode.

I need to learn more about this “mic cable”

PetitModem, basically

Cool But is it just a cable, or does it need software installed (such as PetitModem)? From what you’re saying, it seems like you wouldn’t, but I just want to check.

Good question... PetitModem needs CFW to work, right?

Of course not, it's supposed to be an alternative to using CFW That's not to say you shouldn't get CFW ;): https://3ds.hacks.guide/

Either using sbfm, PetitModem or a key. Though you don’t need CFW to use sbfm, zoogie recently released 2 new exploits, new browserhax and smilehax lle. you could then install steel has with free steeldiver subways and Smilehax lle or browserhax, sthetix made a video where he used browserhax and installed cfwin less than a miniute

SBFM is a CIA (installs to the HOME menu) though, isn't it? CFW is needed for CIAs because of the signature patches the 3DS needs. EDIT: Oops, it also comes as a 3dsx app. Still, installing it as a CIA is much better, because CIA homebrew apps are much more stable. Also video guides suck, don't follow them.

This gave me an idea... We could make an internet-powered SB-Download Station program as a CIA, that downloads and injects the demos you choose that are available. I just need a person that knows how to do that...

I would like to do that. I've been programming in C++ lately and I could merge my DSi-like GUI I am making with this project as 3dsx or cia. I want to learn, how to manage files (SmileBASIC ext data and SD card folders to be exact) and how to do http requests, anyway.
Some ideas I came up with (Unsure) Use GitHub to hold the projects and do pull requests to add, patch or remove projects. (Unsure) Add a section to the app to copy a project from SmileBASIC for submission on the GitHub repository. A nice GUI that resembles the SmileBASIC Top Menu. Make metadata files to make a SmileBASIC 4-like download page. (If GitHub is used, I'd need to update the index table every time projects are changed) ↑ These are my offers. It may take a bit of time though since school is overwhelming me right now.

Well, for the http requests and those things, we would need someone experimented with it (like Record). But if you are experienced with program-making on the 3DS, I would definitely appreciate the help for the project. Feel free to post any concepts of the application.

You could do that in lpp, the same engine that sbfm uses. We could do it with sbapi, sbapi.me/get/xxxxxx/zip And download the raw files. I might be able to make that Edit: yes I will be able to make that, if anybody is experienced with lpp, you can help!

Yeah but, we need to inject the file to the SB savefile... And what Im asking to myself is... How do we inject THAT file directly to the savefile without the (de)compression crap?
