For a program that I am working on, I have used code found in code snippets and forums. Is it appropriate to ask for permission to use the code and credit the author?
Note that I do not mean taking code from published programs but rather code found in resources that are available on SBS.
I personally don't think it is necessary to ask/credit for resources posted on SBS, but I want to know what others think.

Should I ask for permission to use code snippets found on SBS and give credit?

Always give credit (even if it's just a comment in your code) both so the creator gets recognition, and so other people can find the code you used.
Ask for permission if it isn't something specifically posted for other people to use (like, if you're taking some code from someone's game or something). If you ask for permission to use a code snippet here, you're just wasting their time.

Hotlinking this thread here.I didn't add to that forum because I wasn't addressing published programs and figured the "rules" were different for code snippets on SBS so I created this thread.

EDIT: I am wrong, I found part of the forum where this is addressed, though could have used more clarification
