I increased their speed on purpose and increased the drum beat tempo too.

Yes, in the original space invaders arcade the invaders sped up as their ranks decreased because the CPU just had more free processor cycles. Technically it is a bug, but the developer thought it added to the game and left it in.
My program has them speed up as their rank decreases too, not because of reduced CPU or memory use, just because I told them to as I wanted to emulate the original.
