Hello. My name is Anthony, but you can call me by my self-proclaimed nickname, Gale. I figured I'd introduce myself, since this is my first post on..well anything really. You know, proper netiquette and all that.
I don't know if this will ever become a reality...
But for the sake of this question, let's assume that I:
1. Am capable of creating a unique game for SmileBasic.
2. Am capable of creating unique visuals, characters, story, music, etc. for said game.
3. Am willing to invest hours upon hours for the development of this game.
(Hypothetical. Not saying I am capable of these things.)
My question is this: If I were to make a game, should I even bother with trying to create unique assets for my game?
My concern stems from the fact that this is open source - meaning anyone could edit my program, upload a modified version of it, and claim it as their own. I don't want to put in countless hours of hard work just for someone to take it and claim it. And It's not really stealing if it's open source, so...I know this is kind of selfish, but...
I want to create original content with SB. And I want people to be able to enjoy it (assuming I decide to upload it). But I don't know if I should, given this potential risk.
I should stress that I don't mind if people edit something of mine, so long as people are aware of what the original is and who created the orginal.
Of course, this is just a hypothetical interpretation. Perhaps this platform isn't the best to be doing these things in the first place. After all, it is intended for beginners...of which I am.
But what opinions do you have? Should I upload original stuff anyway?
Thank you for your time...and plz dun hayte meh. :(
How Much Originality

It's pretty easy to tell if something is stolen (most of the time) so I wouldn't worry about this too much. Thanks for the response. I just wanted to make sure I knew what I was getting into before I decided to try anything.
I'd say you should go for it! I'm sure everyone would love a game with unique assets. The default ones are getting a bit stale, after all. And if somebody tries to copy it from you, I'm sure people will notice and call out the copycat, so don't worry too much about that. Don't quote me on this, but I think SB projects might be open source by default, but you might still be able to attach your own free distribution licence to it. (After all, any and all published works are protected by copyright since creation, regardless of what the work was made in. Here's a little article on this.)
I've already seen some of you're work and it is fantastic! Don't give up, please! :)
I'm also making a game with custom assets, but it'll be a while until it's complete. Shh, keep it a secret. :o

Trust me, the copycat always gets caught. I have had the copycat problem recently though. A guy took my game and just changed the sprites and reposted it without giving me credit. If you want to check out the game the real one is Alien Attack and the copy is Dorito Shooter 2.I noticed that. My condolences. I upvoted your game and downvoted the ripoff, in support, Will they be forced to give credit to you, or..?
