Every time I try to sit down and make a large project, I either give up quickly or work slowly.I haven't gave up on anything (I publicly announced.)
You see now adays, people have already thought up of every thing. Sure, you can tweak the story a little bit and tweak the art, but literally every idea has already been taken. At this point creativity is not something new, but a reinterpretation of something wether it's slight graphics change to a different story, it's all the same. At least when it comes to the gameplay, you can't think of something new. A cross puzzle? Nope sir diggity dog. A 2D game that with the click of a button could change to 3D? Paper Mario has a word with you. A game where you explore New trinton, a brand new galaxy? Well good code of paint But it's still a basic copy of metroid or like any other game where you explore planets/galaxies. So at this point remakes are justifiable. But hey, you don't have to think that. This is just my opinion.

Yes, exactly, VISUALIZE it. Once again a misunderstanding. I mean as in the game play, elements, and mechanics can't change now adays. No, of course you can make an original story where Michael Jordan gets abducted by aliens then get sent on a trip to heaven and back and then talk about it in talk shows, but that doesn't mean it's going to be original in GAME MECHANICS. that's what I meant. You see now adays, people have already thought up of every thing. Well you could have a game mechanic where, sense green isn't a creative color, everything that's green is also defective.
That's my own original idea (except the thing about green not being creative from dhmis, but the defecting because of only that is my idea.)
Oh also, just because something has been used before doesn't mean nobody can come up with it on their own, because they haven't necessarily seen the mechanic in the past. But they would still get sued.

But they would still get sued.Wether or not you've seen it before doesnt mean it hasn't been used. One time during school i came up with this "original" idea where you were a person in a normal world turned block due to a virus, and there was a mechanic i thought of where you change between 3D and 2D perspectives for puzzles and much more, but my friend said the story was similar to pixel gun 3D's and the cool mechanic was in Super Paper Mario, which made me really sad. Just because you never heard of a game, (in this case, Super paper mario,) doesn't mean its not already taken. A machanic where anything green is defective, while original, seems to be based of games where there is goggles, visions, and... well items in full green doing special things (green lightsaber, greeen button, green glowstick, green emerald/emerald block, green pipes, green platforms, etc). Yes i admit it's a little ridiculous, but there are so many different "special" green objects in games. I mean there is also special blue, red, yellow, and purple (r.i.p. orange. Nothing is special about you.) objects. But at this point you'd either be really persistant and stick to your opinion, (which is okay. Everyone had an opinion.) or you are starting to realize what I'm talking about. I mean, genres are basically the equivalent of admitting that your game has or is a certain mechanic.
There is plenty of space for originality, it just might not be as obvious. First and foremost, game design philosophy. Who said beating every boss has to lead to a new ability? Why can't beatting one boss lead to another dead end that you need an ability for?
Who it be disappointing? Yes. Would it make it one of the most me memorable dead ends in your game(if the boss was well designed), maybe.
That is just one example. Break conventions. How about a metroidvania where you have to lose abilities to progress? Like a room where there's a low spike ceiling, but you jump too high to survive.
Go ahead and use these ideas. I'm probably never going to use that second one anytime soon.
Also your story could be a defective block of green beans.

What? You don't want to give up your precious auto-double jump? There is plenty of space for originality, it just might not be as obvious. First and foremost, game design philosophy. What I'm saying though is that even though someone has already made something, you aren't necessarily taking their idea, and could still have an original idea. Original ideas are just ideas that you came up with yourself no help.
EDIT: Oh also music composition
I invented my own style with that lol

To be honest I don't know why where are arguing. This is a thread for a contest. Not about each other's perception of creativity.
Why try to create original game mechanics when you can build off of the ones that are proven to be engaging and enjoyable by the end-users? I believe you can use existing mechanics and still make your game feel unique.
With that being said, what kind of mechanics have you come to expect from survival games (this will help my entry)?

In survival games, the intention is to survive lol
