I hope they won't shut down the SmileBASIC servers ever,
Unfortunately, you’re wishing against the inevitable. No server or domain can last forever, and eventually they’ll have to shut down the servers, maybe in favor of something else, like a new version SmileBASIC (v4, perhaps?). They might stay up for a really long time though, so it’s not a problem as of now, but just saying. If a new version of SmileBASIC has backwards compatibility with v3 programs, then they might keep the servers up even longer, or transfer all the data into a new one. Someone will archive them though, so not all would be lost if they did happen to shut the servers down, and homebrewers are finding ways to breathe life into old games and give them internet capabilities, so maybe if something happened, something like wiimmfi could be made for SmileBASIC.
let's just hope the SB servers are OFFICIALLY shut down when nintendo wi-fi connection gets shut down on 3DS because not everyone has homebrew
I personally don’t have homebrew because I don’t want my 3DS to get bricked, but if Nintendo stopped supporting the 3DS at some point, I may consider it.
i don't have homebrew because my laptop doesn't have micro SD card support
Lol Just use microSD management through System Settings if you want, you’ll be able to access your 3DS’s microSD card through your network.
thank but where can i get 3DS homebrew? i know where i can get Wii U homebrew but not 3DS homebrew

I don’t know how to get homebrew, but I wouldn’t recommend it, Nintendo is strictly against doing so, and if you do, a system update might break your 3DS. Your safest bet is to wait until Nintendo decides to discontinue the 3DS family. Then they won’t release any updates, and you should be able to install homebrew flawlessly.
this conversation has ended and i have now decided against installing homebrew on my 3DS

By bolding the letters on “on my 3DS,” are you suggesting that you’ll install it elsewhere? Even other devices don’t have it easy. An original Wii (not a Wii U with the Wii Menu) would be your safest bet, but I haven’t homebrewed mine, I decided to keep it vanilla.
yes. i was suggesting that i was going to install it on my wii u (i don't have an original wii BTW)

Hoo boy, these quote blocks tho

Yeah, me too

Don't spread mis-information. So long as you don't actively go against guides, there is a 0% chance of bricking with current custom firmware implementations. Not even an update has any chance of harming anything.

For CFW t's not 0% chance, but unless you actively try to mess up nothing will happen, and it''s technically recoverable now anyways. EDIT: check https://3ds.guide and https://smealum.github.io/3ds/. If you just need homebrew, there is no risk unless you intentionally mess with your saves, and that only affects the saves.

I’m not spreading misinformation, Nintendo has actually gone after people who have use exploits to homebrew their 3DS. In almost every update, some patches are applied to break certain exploits and any currently existing homebrew. Not to mention, they can give you some sort of punishment for using homebrew at any time, unless you’re not connected to the internet. And by the way, I didn’t say that installing homebrew could brick your 3DS (even though it technically could, although most trustworthy homebrewers won’t make their homebrew do that), I said a system update could.
System updates still can't brick consoles. There hasn't been any bricks from system updates in a very long time that weren't from user error. Luma3DS (the gold standard for CFW) doesn't cause any problems, and in addition, boot9strap (the gold standard for starting CFW) also allows reflashing in case there is a brick.

Well, I don’t know much about homebrewing, I’ve just heard of things that happened similar to what I was saying. However, it could still happen, even if it hasn’t happened yet. Although the worst that could probably happen is that the homebrew software is disabled. I don’t really know.
"Homebrewing" is not the same as installing custom firmware. Installing homebrew is simply the running of external applications using a loophole in an existing application to run user-created code. Installing custom firmware is a more complicated process that allows much higher control of the system (e.g adding customized badges / home menu icons) You aren't going to brick your system from adding homebrew. And as far as I know, Nintendo hasn't blocked any devices that don't have custom firmware (though I may be wrong). As long as you follow proper instructions (which, in reality, is hard to screw up), you'll be fine. I don't know much about how Nintendo blocks serial numbers, but I do know my device has had CFW for months (including the initial banwave) and is still fully functional.

Someone posted a link to a pirated copy a long time ago, and got shut down by the admins pretty quick. I happen to still have that link, but don't think I can share it without getting in trouble. I know it seems unfair since Petit Computer isn't even on the eShop anymore, but these are the rules we must follow to keep the forums out of legal issues.
Petit Computer isnt on eshop anymore? I never knew that.

I believe a contract with a publisher expired and was never renewed.

When did this happen anyway? I got PTC about 3-4 years ago.

Speaking of SB servers getting shutdown, does anyone else think it would be worth it to make a mass-dump program? Couldn't MASTER3C0RD's system work with some effort?
No, it wouldn't. I'm pretty sure the only thing that would come out of that is a banned NNID/ConsoleID and maybe 50 programs

Did that occur in your initial testing?
The banning didn't, but I don't feel like taking any risks tyvm

If anyone had a large enough hard drive near the same capacity as SmileBoom’s servers, it may be possible to look for a url or some other database where all the SmileBASIC programs that were released are stored and archive it. Maybe we could get the help of web.archive.org if they were willing to archive their servers.

That's a good idea. I'd be willing to designate my hard drive if we could get that working.
I cant even begin to imagine how big the servers must be! there are probably 1,000s of programs and files

Thousands of 10 MB programs. That's only around 100 GB, assuming that there are 10,000 programs and each program is- Oh, 100 GB is a lot, isn't it?

No, that could easily be stored on a single hard-drive.
I may have exaggerated a bit. That is definitely able to fit on my cheap 2008 netbook. However: 100 GB isn't a lot to fit on your hard drive, but it is a lot of content to sift through afterwards. I doubt that even a quarter of it is remotely useful.

Yeah I have a link to it too
So i know this thread is kinda old but i was wondering if you could send me a private message of petit computer as well (Know it's illegal but it's kind of the only way of using it now)
