Sending microphone input volume to a variable?

(Sorry if the questions I'm asking are dumb, I'm still quite new to this programming language.) I'm wanting to make a program that is controlled by the microphone, and for that I assume I'd have to find a way to send the microphone's input volume to a variable. How would I do this?
