About local play...

  • #1 ✎ 211 PesticidePoison Good Page Hidden Achievements Spring 2017 Contest Runner Up I placed 2nd in the SmileBASIC Source Spring 2017 Contest! Programming Contest Third Year My account is over 3 years old Website Does anyone use local play? You see, I was thinking as I was failing to program local play on my rock, paper, scissors game: "will anyone even use this?" I already have a 2 player mode, so multiplayer isn't a problem, but, I mean, how many of you have a friend/family member who has a 3DS, AND smilebasic? Thus I made this poll below to ask: "have you done local play on smilebasic?" Posted

The whole multiplayer connection process is a bit bare bones and confusing in general. Heck, let's just be real here, most people will just do an actual game of rock paper scissors with their hands if they are playing a real person. Posted

I found it pretty easy, I could easily see rather complex multiplayer games being used through it.

I was speaking more on the user's end of things. I don't know why I used the phrasing bare bones. For instance, you can't in game set up a neat menu of selecting host or client, you need to use the built in dialog box that isn't even specialized for the task and just asks you to hit cancel for client. But on the usage side of things, I feel like it is one of the least documented things in SB. It does have a lot of potential overall, at least way more than PTC and it's constant dialog boxes only to send a single file over in one direction. I wish more people would be willing to learn it though. EDIT: As for the Rock Paper Scissors game, I do still feel like all the hassle of setup would make most not bother setting it up except as a test to see how well it works, but it would be very easy, you would only need to send one number each way really that denotes rock paper or scissors and just play the right animations after both people made a choice.

Hobbies At this point, unless they add some form of Online multiplayer, (Which would be especially wonderful for this community, but likely wont ever happen) same system multiplayer is probably the best way to do it, for everyone. I suppose if someone made a turn based game and everyone told the host player (One with the 3DS) what move they were making on chat, then posted a picture of the gameboard or something that would work too, but would be just a bit more complex to pull of. Yeah, I probably should have specified that...I meant more of, "has anyone used local play WITH A FRIEND/FAMILY MEMBER" Because it's way to easy to say you have with your #2 3DS.

Even though it's easy to implement, I think I'll try adding another mode anyway, since it sounds like nobody will use the local play feature, with there already being a 2 player, one 3DS mode. As for "who would play this?" I don't think many people notice this, but when I flip a coin, or play RPS over who gets the TV remote, it always felt unfair somehow, it's impossible to tell if somebody cheated, or if they're really good at it, thus, this game seems like a fair way to settle who get the remote.

Clearly this poll was not entirely pointless...Due to the misleading profile pictures of women, it's very easy to see how someone can think (like I did) that there where tons of women who had SmileBASIC source accounts. And so far, it looks like there's only 1 out of the 27 that voted thus far. Pointless? No. Useless? Totally.
