I have spent 50 or so hours messing with SmileBasic since its release and have gotten absolutely nowhere. I will just give it up and download what people make for it. One thing is for sure I will be taking a break and playing some games on the 3DS. I definitely won't be picking up the Wii-U version unless they have a free offer for already purchasing it. I was having fun at first but the past couple days I was really hating it. I'm super bummed. I wanted to make something for it. Oh well have fun everyone. Hope to see some good apps in the future.

It's a bummer that SmileBasic has been frustrating for you. Is there a particular problem I could help you with?

I'm getting stumpted for ideas too... it's pretty upsetting

I think Smileboom is relying a bit too much on the community and taking too long to translate the basic tutorials to English.

Keep pushing through it and ask us for help whenever you need it...it's definitely worth it and I know you can do it.

http://smilebasicsource.com/forum?ftid=73 Don't try to jump into big projects like this. Start small, and then keep working your way up. And yes, if you have any question many of us would be happy to help.

@Brilliance thanks for the offer but really it just seems like other than Hello World and a couple other simple tasks I fail at every turn. I was having alot of fun at first with the delusion I could actually make my own game from scratch. I had failed at so many things I wouldn't know where to begin with. I think 60 hours worth of time is enough to realize it's just not going to work for this 50 year old man. Yep I'm an old timer and its back to playing the games for myself. I wish it had worked out. I met some really nice people in fact it seems every single person you run into in the SmileBasic community is really nice and wants to help.

It sucks that we couldn't have you around. I was looking forward to whatever you would make, like the Enduro port.

@ilovecopper I had not even tried to start that project. To tell the truth all I was trying to do was to load a background and then put in a characters sprite that would run from left to right. I worked on that for over 30 hours this week. I also did many many tutorials that I could find. Text tutorials I did everyone I could find. Like I said 60 hours of time at least. It just became no fun is all. It all came to angry frustrating head last night. I'm just gonna take a break then come back and look at what other people have made. For now I'm going to play some game that have been backed up on my 3d for at least a couple years. It's time to play Shin Megami Tensei Soul Hackers

Alright. Hope to see you return soon. Maybe at least just to see what the community has made.

@joelable I will be around I like this community. Maybe I will buckle down at some point and give it another go. Especially if somebody will do some good tutorial pages. I actually though myself last night of doing my own tutorial page kind of like beginners going through it together. This community is super nice and the program is good. I'm an old guy who apparently can't grasp programming. One other thing. I had cancer a few years back and the Chemotherapy kind of caused me some minor brain damage. I'm extremely forgetful. That could have something to do with it.

I'm sorry to hear about what happened to you. I'm still looking for tutorials too, I want to learn about sprites.

Thanks for the Encouraging words Joelable. Your really kind. I'm just going to take a hiatus from smilebasic.

As great as it is that people want to help and all, it's also true that programming doesn't come easily to some, and it's totally okay to just use SmileBASIC to play other people's games. I personally think that's one of the best uses of the app. Why should I have to pay $2 for an eShop notebook app?

It's been a longtime since I did a blog. I used to run a quite successful blog on PCEngine games. it had a good 10 year run too and were really involved in the community running contests for High scoreas and giving prizes and stuff. Those were the good old days. If I do a tutorial blog I will probably try and do some things like have a co-host of the week who would do a special guest tutorial and stuff like that. If I can get others involved. Right Now SmileBasic needs all the tutorials with Source code that it can get. Yes I think in a could days I may get started on this project. Helping others might be what I can do.

Okay. Good luck with everything, and hope to see your projects eventually.

I uploaded this project yesterday. http://www.smilebasicsource.com/page?pid=45 It's a platform example and the code is separated in modules(To make it easy to understand). It's still a WIP but it has the player with animated sprites, background, camera handler, and state handler. In my opinion, the examples that are included in the game are BAD. It's really bad practice to leave all the code in one file and giving that to people that have minimum or no knowlege about programming make the matter worse.

I'm good for about 6 to 8 tutorials

I learned how to code in Petit Computer right before the start of my 8th grade year. I spent an entire month fiddling with code before everything finally clicked for me. Don't just give up. I know you say it's tough for you because you had chemo and you're in your 50's, and chances are, you're right. However, you shouldn't give up, because it certainly is possible for you to learn, and it's all worth it in the end when you finally do. I remember my "ah hah!" moment and how happy I was. I want you to feel that same way. Don't start with loading backgrounds or putting sprites on the screen. I started by changing the code in the sample RPG and watching the results. You should try the same. In doing so, you're seeing instant results and the learning process becomes far more enjoyable. Eventually after changing code for so long you'll understand what everything does and then it will make sense. I started by changing the game by changing a few numbers in the DATA statements at the end of the code... Maybe you should try that as well? Good luck to you, and remember, never give up ^.^

@SwordX you are very wise my friend. I'm going to take a break play some Shin Megami Tensei Soul Hackers. Then come back with a clear head. You have a wonderful way with words and are correct. Success always makes one feel good. Thank you for the kind words. I will remember them when I come back :)
