Map file size?

Root / Programming Questions / [.]

JINC_DEVCreated:
So I tried to upload my game but the file was to big, so I had to get gold member ship, but I'm worried that I won't be able to upload it at all when it is complete. And I have found the reason why the file was so big, it was because of map files, so I was wondering if anyone knew how to make all your maps in one file( You obviously can because they give you a lot of space to make the map).

putting the maps all in one file is pretty simple and I have been using that to do the same but doing this means you can't edit the maos later in the map editor which is why I've been making something that converts it back into four files, though I just recently started on this so I've only got the making it one file ready. Anyways if you just want to upload the finished map you can just save a copy for later use. Anyways if you wanot I can give you the little thing I made to make the files into one. (Though it won't delete the four files, you will have to delete those yourseft after making the one file with it all)

Yes give me that little thing and possibly a tutorial on how to use it so I din't screw up.

yep though I could say the same reverse "so I don't screw you up" lol.. anyways its pretty small so it shouldn't take me long *and hey look its in the program currently open on SB*

The most common reason for large project sizes is just too many GRP files. Something like a map file for an entire background layer is just going to be around 64 KB (without compression), while a single GRP file is over 512 KB, meaning you can't even fit 8 of them in the 4MB you're given. That's fine for most purposes, except if you're using actual IMAGES for your backgrounds or something. The easiest way to reduce file size is just to not waste space. Put multiple images in each file, put all your sprites and BG tiles in one file, etc.

Hmm.. ok so just realised one thing, but I'll explain first. First off. This takes an on screen map and saves it into one file, meaning you will first load your map then save it. Which brings me to this, map size, now in most cases people use the default 64x64 map, but for most that don't know, the map can be a max of 127x128. I have no idea what the size of yours is so I'll just make an input. I hit a small snap becausethe map is not saving correctly and only dmsaving one layer so it will take me a bit longer then I thought .. And lastly our familly is going on a small trip today for my dads birthday so I'll be working on it on the drive but won't be able to give it if I finish it until later today

I have run into issues with the size of map files as well. What I have been doing is generating small maps from data on another slot, rather than creating them from the map editor. You can learn how to do that here. I have a program that uses this method and connects generated maps very well but it has been a while since I've worked on it. If you are interested in this method, I can annotate the old program and upload it for a limited time.

Have you finished it yet, I really need it.

Is there a way to change the map size in Smile Tool's map editor? Mind sharing how you do that? Do I need to download a new map editor, or did I miss something?

@Gronade You're stressing him/her out. Give him as much time as he needs or even look for some other program that works
